In 1896 the New Bremen volunteer fire department was formed. A vote was taken to build a building, and a the lot was purchased for the sum of $700. A barn that stood on this site was razed and the new fire station was dedicated in August 1897. The fire bell which struck at 9:00pm each evening reminded generations of young people of the curfew hour. It weighs 750 pounds and was cast by the Buckeye Bell Foundry of Cincinnati for $125. For over 80 years the building served the community as a fire station, mayor's office, town council chamber and jail.
